UPDATE: The Canadian government is now demanding an apology from Fox News.
Canadians have begun to express outrage about comments made on Fox News about the Canadian mission in Afghanistan.
In a five-minute segment on the Fox News late-night program Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld, which aired last week, panelists joked that Canadian soldiers need time off for "manicures and pedicures."
The segment was broadcast after Gen. Andrew Leslie, the Canadian Forces Chief of Land Staff, told a Senate committee the military would need a break of one year from operations after the Afghan mission ends in 2011.
"The Canadian military wants to take a breather to do some yoga, paint landscapes, run on the beach in gorgeous white capri pants," Gutfeld said.
Gutfeld added: "Isn’t this the perfect time to invade this ridiculous country? They have no army."
Doug Benson, another panelist, said he did not even know that Canadian troops were fighting in Afghanistan.
"I didn’t even know they were in the war. I thought that’s where you go if you don’t want to fight - you go chill in Canada," he said.
Canadians are responding to the segment and they are angry. The item has been posted on YouTube by a Canadian under the title How to Lose Friends and Alienate Countries.
What do you think?

Canadian soldiers are fighting and dying in Afganistan in part to continue to defend those rights and freedoms we in Canada and you in the US hold dear.
Among these is that very right to air your sheer stupidity and ingorance of all things not american on the national airwaves.
By the way, can you guys even find Afganistan on a map of the world?

Wow, Fox News.
How sad it is that we even give these clowns an iota of ire.
They are the joke of objective journalism in the US and it appears they are branching out worldwide now...
I guess these self important "salesman" as Keith Oberman describes them are, as usual, devoid of the facts.
Canada has lost more soldiers per capita (by percentage of troops deployed) in Afghanistan than the US has in Iraq.
Now, the last thing I'd do is call into question the honor of the soldiers of either country as they are doing an outstanding job with the missions they've been tasked with.
It is quite sad that a right-wingnut news network would attack a US ally considering it was they and their partisan buddies who pulled out of a UN sanctioned conflict to invade another country without just cause.
All the soldiers in harms way deserve our support and respect.
Too bad the marginalized elements of US society have nothing better to do than pick fights with allies instead of actually finding out what they really stand for...
The citizens of Canada have your backs Canadian and US forces. Keep making us proud!

FOX? isn't that the channel with pointless meaningless shows full of bimbos, extensions and fake tans?
Anything aired on FOX is nothing but garbage along with the people who work for it.
It only proves that ignorance is still out there and anybody south of the Canadian border can't see past their own noses and their own obsession with patriotism.
Would love to say more but my horse is tied out back and I have to get back to my igloo.

Everyone gets caught up in the momentum and who knows given the time of the day the show was on, that perhaps the host and guests may have just finished partaking a beverage or two.
However, they have no call to say what they said about our troops, or for that matter any Allied troops in any conflict.
As stated earlier the USA seems to create conflicts around the world, perhaps they should withdraw their forces from Europe, Asia, Middle East etc. Now what would they do with all their forces home?
Today I called my local cable provider to remove Fox Network, I also had to remove CNN no loss to me.
I urge others to contact their cable/sat provider to remove Fox Network as a protest to "Redeye", GO DO IT for those that serve.

When the FOX News panel started mocking Andrew Leslie's LAST name for sounding too feminine, I knew that I listening to people who weren't playing with a full deck.
I would be more outraged by this if I were American for making my country look ignorant and juvenile.

Outrage, shock, disgust... all of these things come to mind, but I will continue to do what I can to show my support for Canadian soldiers, and the amazing job they are doing.
I wear red on Friday, and I will now contact my MP to get a huge "support our troops" sign for my front yard.
I am hoping that the comments of a few idiots on a low rate "news" show will be lost in a sea of support and good will for our soldiers.
They deserve it.

Comedy ?...okay. Of an extremely insensitive and disrespectful type. Not even close to the same satire of Rick Mercer, filming Americans voicing their own ignorance.
I lived in the US for 10 years and the majority live in a vacuum of their own making and FOX news is a vital part.
Yes, the comments are inflammatory and make me angry. Expect more as we finally pull our troops from Afghanistan. The "you are either for us or against us" mentality is not just a Bush character flaw but a hardened feature of the USA's propaganda inspired patriotism. It is a sickness and mostly I feel sorry for them for they are a controlled mass of societal ignorance and know not what they do.

To be fair to the Americans we do make fun of them sometimes, as they do with us, playful banter.
BUT it crosses a line when insult the Canadian military who have been sending in willing troops into Afghanistan since 2002. Their have been 116 men and women killed in action and these comment are disrespectful to their memories and to their families.
I feel sorry for the Americans who don't look at history, other then their own, and fail to see who guarded their border during the Cold War.
And who have no fear that other countries will attack us, because unlike some countries we have done nothing to disrespect others and are a predominantly peaceful nation. We wouldn't have to rely on the US if they had been making so many enemies, and by extension putting Canadians in harms way.
While some joking may be fun and games I feel that it is the responsibility of the FOX network to show some discretion in what they are airing because it does effect their public relations with their allies.
Posted March 23, 2009 12:28 PM
Fox News is nothing more than the propaganda arm of the American military industrial complex. Their views represent what's wrong with America and their insult of Canadians who are dying alongside their US "comrades", shows why Canada should walk away from their US counterparts and leave them to twist in the wind in an unwinnable war in Afghanistan.
If this had gone to a referendum our troops would not be over there. They would be defending our interests in the arctic the way a sovereign nation should.Do we really think America will defend our interests?
Come on Canada....give your head a shake. America is circling the drain and a thousand Obamas can't save it.

Typical American ignorance. These idiots on Fox obviously are catering to the democratic that enjoys Beavis and Butthead, South Park etc... who's IQ rating is in the negative values.
They probably belong to the part of the American population that can't even point out Canada on a map. Yes, this shouldn't be taken too seriously, but it's just another small example of how Americans generally view us.
All these little jabs and jokes here and there add up to paint a picture of how they see us. But should we feel so bad though when these insults come from a country that most of the world hates anyway?
This is an example of how bullies always need to target others and belittle them to boost their own ego. America may mock Canada, but America doesn't exactly have a perfect image in the eyes of the rest of the world.

I find it deplorable that a US TV station would allow comments of the type made on Redeye to be telecast. The US enlisted our help in the Afgan war in the first place after 911.
It should be noted that most countries in the free world have dealt with terrorist acts.
The UK,France,Spain, Italy,Germany & Canada have dealt with the IRA, Bader Mienhoff, Red Brigade, the FLQ, to name a few. This was dealt with by each country in turn. This was largely ignored by America. Then the World Trade Center gets hit. Not that this wasn't a horrible act with a huge loss of life, it most certainly was.
However now that an international terrorist act took place on US soil it became an "international war on terrorism". All countries must participate. You can't take a bottle of water on a plane anymore! Anyone crossing into the US over the Canadian Boarder needs a passport.
Well, if the opinion presented on Redeye really is the way the US feels over Canada's contribution let them fight it themselves. Bring the boys home and be done with it.

A comparison was brought up between this segment and Rick Mercer's old segments.
Rick Mercer made segments of Americans saying funny or dumb things; pretty different than insulting a country for exercising its independence and not going along with the will of another.
Still it's not surprising, the ridicule should be expected; this will probably just be the first of many (especially from Fox) as more American news medias inform their citizens that Canada will be ending its commitment to this American war.
The same was done to France and other European countries when they disagreed with the American crusade.

Perhaps a History class is in order if they question our resolve as a country....
Didn't we burn down their capital once...Good thing for them we make every effort toward diplomacy first instead of going off half informed making fools of ourselves and begging forgiveness later. I am proud to be a Canadian....I am welcomed abroad by any democracy by showing my maple leaf....
Funny how many Americans try to pass themselves off as Canadians while abroad to wrap themselves in the good will of our foreign friends. at the end of the day...being better educated collectively, we need to take the moral high ground, a practice as foreign to our southern neighbors as breathing water...(just one of many things we share that they can't live with out) we at last must be the bigger collective consciousness and consider the source...small people, with little or no power in there lives and limited knowledge, and little perspective on the real world. who need to feel important by bullying.
After all...they elected George W not once but twice! Not a vote for there collective intelligence! A Pox on Fox Indeed...I will be eliminating any of there channels and services from my television services and encourage anyone offended by this to do the same!

I, also, have lived in the U.S. and know that U.S. knowledge of Canada and our activities ranks with U.S. knowledge of nations in general. That is just the way it is.
But this is about the attitude of some Americans, not their knowledge. We are not likely to be able to change that, but their action can cause us to change the way we think about the things we do and, perhaps, as a result, change the things we do.
It reminds me of something that a close relative (by marriage) said to me during my two decades in the Canadian Forces. He told me that he thought my job was about helping to keep the world safe for his investment-centered economic lifestyle by which he could exercise his freedom to accumulate wealth.
I felt quite angry about this but, over time, I could see that what he said was not totally wrong, and this must have been part of the evolution that saw me make my way out of the Canadian Forces.
Yes, this all makes me angry. But the issue then becomes a question of what we do with our anger, and we can only use it to change ourselves, though, in that change, we can still use our words with the precision and effectiveness of all those bullets they have but we don't have (and probably don't need).

The stunningly ill-informed and shallow Fox team, smugly boasting about their 'big toys'.
Remember this Fox, Canada sent more troops per capita than you did (WW2) and entered a full two years before you found the will to join the battle.
Your inglorious abandonment of the Afghan people has cost our troops dearly and your own President recognizes our brave defense against long odds, not the least of which is being tied to your clumsy foreign policy and shattered trust and respect abroad.
You trash the one ally who has stood by you faithfully.

Such comments coming from FOX is not surprising.
As a mouth piece of the US neo-cons and the Republican party FOX once again demonstates the arrogance and ignorance that the US has of all its friends and allies.

Okay, we've established that these comments were insulting, ill-informed and disrespectful to all Canadians especially our Armed Forces.
But lighten up a little: let the Fox commentators have their little chuckle. Had any of us ever even heard of these people before? No. Will any of us tune in to this program ever again? Not likely. This is their 15 minutes of fame and I expect they will try to maximize its effect. The last laugh will be on them.
These "journalists" can't exactly be at the pinnacle of their profession if they are reduced to doing a 3 am segment on Fox (a broadcaster that is consistently disparaged throughout the news world).

Aside from their ignorant and insulting comments towards our armed forces, FOX News (and perhaps some of the American public) need to stand up and take note about the RCMP vs their police forces...have a think about the reason why the US police are heavily armed with bullet proof vests while the RCMP wear red and ride horses - it is sad that they feel this is worth joking about.

That doesn't strike me as particularly funny. At all.

The Fox News segment was insulting at best but to think that no one believes Fox is a mistake.
The vast majority of Americans have a better understanding of and appreciation for their allies. But, as a "snowbird" in the Bible belt, I hear the things the Neo Cons believe in.
The latest is that Obama will be controlling ammunition because he can't control guns so NRA members must buy up all the available ammo! Texas will need our help!!
Let's just hope that either the Obama administration or at least one of the more balanced networks picks up on this story and tells the real truth about Canada fighting in Afghanistan AT THE REQUEST of the US government.

Having spent the last 10 years living in the US, I know for a fact that most viewers of FOX News believe it to be factual. It's sad, but true.
The reality is, Americans always think they're the only ones in any fight, and any argument to the contrary is pure propaganda. They're world view is spoon fed to them by the likes... you guessed it! Fox News!
They have no idea of the world around them, and far more dangerously, no interest. Life was good for the citizens of Rome, but most Romans weren't citizens.
Americans are the new Romans, and the rest of the world is there to do their bidding.

I sent the following to Fox last night.
Wow...
Just when I think that fox news couldn't get anymore "Enquire" like, I catch CBC (a true news source) and find out that you are criticizing Canada's war effort.
(Especially in the wake of our nation's loss of four more fine young men.)
Reread an unbiased account of the history of the last 7 or so years and recognize that Canada willingly joined to help fight your fight in Afghanistan and remained there while your military became side tracked in Iraq so President Bush could settle his fathers' debt.
Had your government of the time stuck it out in Afghanistan instead of leaving your work there to other, we together could have ended the Afghan war by now.
I guess oil and revenge win out over defeating the real source of the Sept 11th tragedy.
America has never had a better partner than they do in Canada and while we do not have your number in population or the capital resources you have access to (recognize that access to and in pocket are very different things), we do have pride in the fact that we contribute to the world when other only take.
You and those like you only contribute to the negative view of Americans that grew to record heights during the Bush administration. Simply put you and your opinions give the United States a bad name.
Hopefully your new president can cure what ails your country. I am sure he and others like him recognize that part of that sickness is bias and ignorance which, in effect, means that you are part of the problem.
Do everyone on both sides of the 49th parallel a favour and educate yourself before you spout off or just don't speak.

I particularly love the part where they mock the RCMP for their horses and red jackets.
While this is obviously ridiculous the commentators somehow still seem to find it preferable that their police drive around in armored cars.
Where you you rather live?
A fictional Canada where it is so safe that the police ride ponies or the US where the level of violence is such that the cops need tanks?
I'm not sure how they think this makes them look superior. Idiots.

This is an organization with no code of ethics and boy do they do a good job at showing it every day.
We talk about school children being mean and bullying, that's all Fox news is; a big bully who nobody really likes or takes seriously.

Sometimes people go to far - this is my rebuttal to fox red eye's comments
dear whatever you are
As our brothers and sisters continue to return home in flag draped coffins , as Canada continues to prosecute the war that you in the United States started and then (in your infinite wisdom) abandoned in favor of finding weapons of mass destruction in Iraq .
Leaving Canada with 1/10th the US population holding the proverbial bag.
You are right about one thing ,our men and women in uniform (some of them going their 4th and and 5th tours of duty in Afghanistan) are tired.
Tired of being used as cannon fodder / tired of the U.S. giving billions in arms / planes and equipment to Pakistan which end up in the hand of the enemy(your arms industry always arms both sides....except Canada) that end up killing our best and brightest while our boys and girls don't even have the benefit of U.S.helicopter lift.
Tired of your so called friendly fire . Very tired of you and your star spangled swastika draped propaganda machine. You want to invade Canada - do you even know where we are located?
You armchair pundits make me vomit / I am sure that if you bunch were confronted by a Taliban soldier you would curl up in the fetal position , soil yourself, and then give up every bit of information you could come up with (including the address of your mother).
OK , let us assume for a moment that you could manage to locate Canada ( after all it is a significant landmass to your north and as such hard to miss ) Bring it on , you silly sap , Just remember what happened to the Nazis in Russia in the 1940's.
We could just sell our oil and gas to China via our new deep water port ,then what will you use to run your war machine.
sincerely appalled

Have a nice day!

It's nice to see that the idea of invading Canada wasn't just limited to some of my classmates when I attended high school in the US, but is part of the verbal diarrhea coming from Fox News.
I wouldn't take the comment too seriously, this is Fox News we're talking about, they're not exactly known for being fair, balanced or knowledgeable, however an apology for this slander would be appropriate.

Obviously war is a very serious matter in general, and more specifically the mission in Afghanistan, and for that reason alone this piece crosses some lines....
However, they do bring up one very valid point... if Canada was geographically located anywhere else in the world, instead of right next to the last super power, and NATO ally, who by treaty must defend us as if we were one country, it would be impossible for our military to "take a year off".
... this does raise some serious questions about the resources we put into our armed forces when our top military commander tells the world we can not defend our own borders
Fox is hardly the best place to turn for insightful discussion, but purhaps it wouldn't be quite so offensive if it didn't get so close to the truth.

Utter trash, of course. It's one thing for Canada to make fun of themselves, and in the same token for Americans to poke fun at their neighbour to the north; it's part of the relationship between our two countries.
However, when you base an ENTIRE segment on the utter and complete denigration of our country's armed forces, who are fighting alongside American military personnel in one of the most dangerous areas of the world... that is simply unacceptable.
I am sure many American soldiers fighting alongside Canadians are utterly ashamed.
These comments do not represent the vast majority of Americans, I am sure; it is more garbage spewing from the mouthpiece of FOX news.
It is time that company start being accountable for the opinions of their journalists, especially when it is complete nonsense; do they not realize that Mounties do NOT wear the serge on general duty?
Honestly, if you don't understand Canada, don't bother discussing it on national television.
Any other journalist in Canada would find themselves unemployed in short order for a stunt like this.
It's called journalistic integrity. Something these brutes have none of.

Here's a thought for fox your the strongest nation in the world, why do back packers from the US put Canadian flags on their gear?
I've also seen some of their vaunted military wear Canadian flag pins on their shirts while on deployment with STANAVFORLANT.
Would Fox care to brag about that?

That was the ultimate in ignorance, even for Fox.
It must be hard, even for people as stupid as this group, to rattle on about the superiority of "The Greatest Nation in the Universe", given their record at peacekeeping, their uncanny ability to protect the world from weapons of mass destruction and the obvious flair for all things financial .
Obviously ,none of these idiots recall the order in which the world responded to our last two world wars! The lady who said "who really cares what they think!" is right, but it is very hard to ignore such gross ignorance.

Well, the FOX on the hilltop had better stay put;

Fox News is an entertainment network, not a journalistic organization.
Having served in the US military for the past 19 years, I have had the oppurtunity to work alongside Canadian military people with AWACS, in Afghanistan, and here in Florida.
I can say that to a single member, they've been some of the finest, most professional folks I've ever served alongside.
The comments on Fox are ignorant, irresponsible, insulting, and embarrassing. Bad comedy at it's worst.

Is no one at the CBC aware that this was a panel of standup comedians and that none of them are journalists?!
They were just trying to out-riff each other with common Canadian stereotypes.
One of the guys was a contestant on Last Comic Standing for crying out loud - do you think media outlets in the U.S. would get their knickers in a knot if Sean Cullen said something that mocked Americans?
It would have all the resonance of a toot in a windstorm. Can't the media here grow a pair and not try and whip something up every single time someone in the U.S. makes us cry by not saying how great we are?
Posted March 23, 2009 10:35 AM
We should not worry about the fox news reporters because we know by previous reporting that this company cannot afford people with more than a single digit IQ.
The good reporters are at CBC, NBC, CBS, etc.
Now you know why the new US administration is pushing hard to reform the education system in the States so they don’t get any more future idiots like this.

Gutfeld's comments are way off the mark. Every Canadian knows this and any Americans who are halfway up to date on the war in Afghanistan know this too.
But for CBC News to subtly intend on its front page that Fox News is "unbalanced"... that takes the cake. It is particularly ironic, almost laughable, given Heather Mallick and Neil MacDonald are given such prominence on the very same CBC News front page.
Fox provides more balanced reporting in a day than CBC provides in year. People expecting balance don't go to CBC, they go to Fox and/or the web.
So, yeah, boo Gutfeld. But CBC is in no position to question the "balance" at Fox.

I have been offended many times by the fools on Fox and I have never ever turned the channel on, but their latest insult was too much. I have a dear friend in the military, at Petawawa, who has served in Afghanistan and to have his and others efforts and sacrifices belittled is unacceptable.
I went to my Starchoice account and had Fox "News" removed from my account. It was part of a bundle and required a moment or two to figure out how to get rid of it but that is the least I can do.
Whether we watch the channel or not having it in our accounts means they receive subscription fees from us. I will not pay to have our brave and finest insulted. Fair and Balanced? Fairly unbalanced more like. Show you care. REMOVE FOX "NEWS" FROM YOUR TV SUBSCRIPTIONS

Why is our media focusing on this!? Of course it will generate anger - that's what it's meant to do. But, in a time when we need to focus on working together - let's focus on the positive! Even Americans know that Fox News is full of p*** & vinegar - that's what they balance!
Focus on Barack; focus on joint missions. Don't focus on idiots who want more than 15min. Canadians (and Americans) don't need a reason to fight - they need a reason to come together.
Fox News is irrelevant; the people who buy into their crap would come up with it themselves. But, most Americans don't - and those are the Americans we (and our media) should focus on!

Another example of the poorly informed US media which is a dis-service to the American people. After living there for 15 years I don't think I ever heard them discuss who their partners in this war are.
Their US media bias without international broadcasts like BBC or CBC or Al Jezeera creates a poorly informed "strongest country" in the world waiting for the fall!

To Greg Gutfeld,
I am just going to hang around a wait for your apology. Or the one that comes from your network.
Just another useless rant from a poor misguided nation. You guys spend way too much time in the media world. Maybe you should stick to a topic you might actually understand like waiting for Britney Spears to fall off the wagon again. I am sure your listeners are more interested in that than anything to do with Canada.
Do your followers even know where Canada is? Ask your audience of geniuses if they can spell Canada? Maybe even get tough on them and see if they can name our Capital city. Good Luck!
Maybe the panel that you had on last night needs to go over to see who is doing the real work over there. Or even better, how about you bring the same gang of intellects up to CFB Petawawa (not the Capital) to give the same comments to the families of those who just lost there kids. We dare you.
We will gladly wait until they get back from either trip to hear the apology. Maybe then at least it will be an informed comment. What a concept!
Your neighbours in Canada.
PS. We still got a bank up here bucko. How about you?

I was offended by the comments as such "journalists" spewed their ignorance. We have fought with that country ( U.S ) everytime one of their politicians opens their mouth and makes another enemy. As far as spending money on our army???
We have spent it elsewhere, like social assistance progams, education, and health care.. 3 things that the United States lacks. Don't remember who invented Kevlar?
It was a Canadian scientist.. and for the Americans who don't know what that is... it is the lining inside of your beloved bullet proof vests! Our RCMP are veered as statues of honesty, integrity, and true Canadian honor... unlike your police departments who are always in the news for corruption.
Yes, Fox News.. we are in the war, yes we have had soldiers who have fallen for the love of their country.. maybe to jog your memories on how crucial we are to NATO and the world we should send our troops home and let you fight your own battles.
